Why We Need Your Support
Little Salt began as a simple idea: three friends floating a forgotten tributary through their Colorado town. What we found along the way was anything but simple. Behind the current lies one of the most urgent stories of our time, the fight over water in the American West, and the farmers, families, Indigenous leaders, and policymakers whose lives depend on how that fight is resolved.
For three years, we've built this film from the ground up, sustained by small grants, community support, and the belief that this story matters. That belief has carried us through production. Now, we're at the finish line, and we need help getting across it. Post-production, editing, sound design, color, music, is where a film either comes together or falls short of its potential. It's also where funding tends to run out. We're asking for support not to start something new, but to finish something real: a film that Crested Butte Film Festival and MountainFilm Festival have already expressed interest in screening once it's complete.
The Colorado River is at a breaking point, and so is the moment to tell this story. With your support, Little Salt can reach the audiences who need to see it, and help shape how the next century of water conversations unfold in the West.
Our Support
Forever Our Rivers
Fiscal Sponsorship
Little Salt operates under the fiscal sponsorship of Forever Our Rivers, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Fiscal sponsorship allows independent film projects like ours to receive tax-deductible donations and apply for grants restricted to nonprofit entities, without having to form our own 501(c)(3). Forever Our Rivers provides financial oversight and administrative support for funds raised on behalf of the film, ensuring that contributions are managed responsibly and directed toward the completion of the project. This partnership also reflects a shared mission: Forever Our Rivers works to protect the health and vitality of rivers across the Southwest, values that are deeply embedded in the story Little Salt tells.
Comittment Grant
Mountainfilm Festival
Little Salt is honored to be named a 2025 Mountainfilm Commitment Grant recipient. Launched in 2010, the Commitment Grant initiative helps documentary storytellers move projects forward, supporting films celebrating adventure, activism, social justice, culture, environment and indomitable spirit. This year's grant cycle saw interest hit an all-time high, with the largest applicant pool to date, making this recognition especially meaningful. Being selected places Little Salt alongside a distinguished group of documentary projects, many of which have gone on to premiere at the Mountainfilm Festival in Telluride, Colorado. This support brings us one step closer to completing the film and sharing this story with the audiences who need to see it.
